Thus the Treatise on the Awakening of Faith states: 'The Dharmakāyas of the Buddhas have no mutual perception of physical marks between this and that.' Since there are no other Buddhas, there are no other sentient beings. When the direct retribution has been dissolved, how could the dependent retribution remain? Although the three thousand are vividly present, they transcend marks of internal and external. If one grade of fundamental ignorance still remains, then there must still subtly be marks of self and other. Thus the Treatise on the Awakening of Faith states: 'Because of the transforming consciousness, one sees that there are other Buddhas.' Having seen other Buddhas, how could there not be other sentient beings? Since direct retribution still exists, how could dependent retribution be dissolved? Therefore, taking the internal contemplation that has already been accomplished and passing through external phenomenal objects, they spontaneously merge.
