Consider: through whom did you attain the understanding that the five grades are the stage where contemplative practice is perfected? Why not acknowledge and submit to your past delusion, turning from the perverse toward the correct? How can you steal another's meaning to deceive and confuse future generations? Judging by this attitude of yours, you are truly not a person who transmits the teachings. You fall short by a thousand leagues even of aspiring to the mind of the human realm; how could you discuss the Buddha-Dharma? From this we know that your talk of leading practitioners of the degenerate age to cultivate Zhiguan is futile: since you yourself established that only upon reaching the stage of the five grades does one contemplate the two objects, all sentient beings would have no share in cultivating contemplation! Taking such an understanding and arbitrarily debating with others the intent behind establishing and setting aside teachings and contemplations—can this even be permissible?
