Thus Jingxi said: 'If you suddenly have no teacher, you should use this text and the Chanmen to test good and bad marks.' He also said: 'If you are close to a teacher, in principle you must consult him on doubts.' In speaking of 'drawing close to a teacher', since he was instructing practitioners of recent times, how could he have been telling them to draw close to Great Master Zhiyi? And in the section on the good friend, it says: 'Endowed with both practice and understanding, the virtue resides in that person.' This means that what benefits me lies solely in understanding; hence he cites those who can preach the Dharma to transform people's minds. Furthermore, under 'mutual arising', it says: 'If one penetrates the three truths, how could he merely be worthy of being a worldly master of the Vaipulya?' Thus such statements are intended to have practitioners draw close to a model teacher, not to instruct them to read the texts on their own and mistake the heterodox for the orthodox.
