Disciples of the Buddha! I now further expound for you the profound and wondrous Dharma of the twelve links of dependent origination; may you, relying on the power of the Three Jewels, understand each and every one. The essence of these twelve phenomena is the three virtues of the great mahāparinirvāṇa; yet because you are deluded, they turn instead into the three paths, and the cause and effect of the three periods of time wheel around without ceasing. I will now first chant the aspect of arising of the twelve links of dependent origination for you, and next chant the aspect of cessation of the twelve links of dependent origination. May you thoroughly realize that these phenomena of arising and cessation are right where they are neither arising nor ceasing, right where they are ultimate, right where they are pure, and right where they are sovereign: when one is ultimate all are ultimate, when one is pure all are pure, and when one is sovereign all are sovereign, together with all Buddhas realizing the great nirvāṇa. (The assembly chants in unison:) Namely, ignorance conditions volitional formations; volitional formations condition consciousness; consciousness conditions name-and-form; name-and-form conditions the six sense bases; the six sense bases condition contact; contact conditions feeling; feeling conditions craving; craving conditions grasping; grasping conditions becoming; becoming conditions birth; birth conditions old age, death, worry, sorrow, suffering, and distress. (This is the aspect of arising through dependent origination. Next, listen to the aspect of cessation through dependent origination.) Namely, from the cessation of ignorance comes the cessation of volitional formations; from the cessation of volitional formations comes the cessation of consciousness; from the cessation of consciousness comes the cessation of name-and-form; from the cessation of name-and-form comes the cessation of the six sense bases; from the cessation of the six sense bases comes the cessation of contact; from the cessation of contact comes the cessation of feeling; from the cessation of feeling comes the cessation of craving; from the cessation of craving comes the cessation of grasping; from the cessation of grasping comes the cessation of becoming; from the cessation of becoming comes the cessation of birth; and from the cessation of birth comes the cessation of old age, death, worry, sorrow, suffering, and distress.
