1.89

上來恭白聖師已竟，將受戒法。疇念汝等自從無始已來煩惱厚重，無惡不為、身心不淨，然此戒法乃是白淨之法，身器清淨方堪求受。是故應當求哀懺悔，如洗故衣方堪受色。矧乎如來滅度二千餘年，正法隱沒、邪風廣扇，生當此時雖見佛聞法，不生信樂者有之，良由無明所覆、見網交纏。若不改往修來，何由還源復本。以是因緣，今日道場同於佛前發露罪根，各須一心志誠懺悔。

Above, the reverent announcement to the sacred masters has been completed, and you are about to receive the precept-dharma. Reflecting upon yourselves, from beginningless time your afflictions have been thick and heavy; there is no evil you have not committed, and your body and mind are impure. Yet this precept-dharma is a pure and white Dharma, and only when the vessel of the body is purified is one fit to seek and receive it. Therefore, you should plead for mercy and repent, just as an old garment must be washed before it is fit to receive dye. How much more so given that the Tathāgata entered extinction more than two thousand years ago: the True Dharma has sunk into obscurity, and perverse winds blow far and wide. For those born at such a time, though they see the Buddha and hear the Dharma, there are some who do not give rise to faith and joy; this is truly because they are veiled by ignorance and entangled in the net of views. If you do not reform the past and cultivate the future, how can you return to the source and revert to the origin? For this reason, in today's bodhimaṇḍa we confess the roots of our transgressions together before the Buddha; each of you must single-mindedly and with utmost sincerity repent:
