孤山法師，吾宗之先覺者也。著《闡義鈔》解《請觀音疏》，於中發明消伏三用，義亦詳矣。而於一家教觀大旨，尚復差忒。予切陋之，於是設問一十九章，徵問是否，俾諸學者於茲法義不為異端所惑云。天禧紀元十月一日，四明（知禮）敘。

Dharma Master Gushan was an early awakened master of our school. He composed the Chanyi chao to explain the Commentary on the Invitation of Avalokiteśvara, in which his clarification of the three functions of extinguishing and subduing was detailed in its meaning. Yet regarding the great purport of doctrinal teaching and contemplation of our school, he still fell into error. I deeply deplore this, and have therefore formulated nineteen questions to interrogate whether it is correct, so that students on this point of Dharma principle will not be misled by deviant views. On the first day of the tenth month in the first year of the Tianxi era, Siming (Zhili) wrote this preface.
