Answer: Originally, the reason the four truths are neither reduced to three nor increased to five is that medicine and illness correspond to each other, and the meaning of cause and effect is complete. When the Tiantai school matches them with the four teachings, it encompasses both the biased and the perfect and contains the two principles; the whole course of transforming and guiding beings, from beginning to end, is fully provided. The Tripiṭaka and common [teachings] explain the ultimate truth within the realms; the distinct and perfect [teachings] explain the middle way beyond the realms. Furthermore, although the principle is of two kinds, the teachings are divided into four distinctions. The Tripiṭaka and common are the clumsy and skillful within the realms; the distinct and perfect are the clumsy and skillful beyond the realms. Moreover, the former two explain the ultimate, and the ultimate principle does not differ; the distinct and perfect explain the middle, and the middle is divided into the exclusive and non-exclusive. All phenomena in the Tripiṭaka and common are constructed through karma and delusion; all phenomena in the distinct and perfect are transformed and constructed by the buddha-nature. They are universally called 'truths' because 'truth' carries the meaning of being examined and real, and also carries the meaning of clear discernment. These are general explanations; they will be set forth individually below.
