Answer: Tiantai inherited from Nanyue the three kinds of wondrous dharmas: the first is the dharma of sentient beings, the second is the Buddha-dharma, and the third is the mind-dharma. Because these three are wondrous, they cannot be viewed with the eyes of oxen and sheep, nor can they be fathomed by ordinary sentiments and worldly intellect. Only one who possesses the wisdom-eye of a Tathāgata is capable of appraising them, precisely because their essence and nature are inconceivable, each being lofty and vast. As the Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: 'As the mind is, so is the Buddha; as the Buddha is, so are sentient beings. The mind, the Buddha, and sentient beings—these three are without distinction.' All buddhas wondrously realize this Way of non-distinction; therefore, they can transform a single body into hundreds of millions of bodies, and from a single dharma expound immeasurable dharmas, so that the great function of the six sense faculties and three karmic modes throughout the Dharma realm is without end. Although sentient beings dwelling in delusion cannot do this, because their nature-virtue fundamentally possesses this essence and function, even within the body of karmic retribution they can bring about minor transformations. For instance, in high antiquity Emperor Shun divided his body to respond to his two consorts; Qiannü's soul detached and united into a single entity; and a county magistrate napping by day had his consciousness transformed into a fish. There have even been cases where two people lay side by side on a pillow while both their souls were in hell undergoing torment. Things like this cannot be exhaustively cited; they are all matters of the inconceivable karmic retribution within the realm of sentient beings. Hence we know that it is not Prior Wang alone. Why trouble yourself to raise this doubt and difficulty?
