Answer: Regarding the single chapter on "Entrustment", both Ci'en and Anguo ordered it moved to after the chapter on "Encouragement". [They argued that] if it is placed before, there are eight contradictions and ten impossibilities. The intent of Tiantai is that one must follow Kumārajīva, placing it next to the chapter on "Spiritual Powers". Jingxi refuted them comprehensively and specifically, also using eight impossibilities and ten contradictions. First, after emerging from the stupa, whenever Prabhūtaratna is subsequently described, it always says "within the stupa" and does not say "seeing the Buddha"; if it were moved to the end, there would be no place for emerging from the stupa—this is the first impossibility. Second, after the emanation bodies dispersed, whenever anything is described subsequently, it only discusses the Buddha's stupa and does not touch upon emanation bodies; if it were moved to the end, there would be no place where the Buddhas dispersed—this is the second impossibility. Third, in the text of "Entrustment", from where the Buddhas disperse and the lands become defiled onward, the words of the sūtra text do not touch upon purity; if it were moved to the end, there would no longer be any defiled place—this is the third impossibility. Fourth, the assembly originally stayed on the ground, and ascended into empty space on account of the stupa; after the Buddhas dispersed and [Śākyamuni] emerged from the stupa, the subsequent text has them on the ground; if it were moved to the end, there would be no place where they returned to the ground—this is the fourth impossibility. Fifth, since the sūtra is not yet finished after the "Entrustment" chapter, it merely describes the assembly's joy and does not say "and departed"; if it were moved to the end, one would have to add "and departed"—this is the fifth impossibility. Sixth, after the chapter on "Encouragement" there is no further text, and since the sūtra has already ended, it says "and departed"; if it were moved to the end, one would have to delete "and departed"—this is the sixth impossibility. Seventh, when the matters of the origin and the traces were concluded, there had to be an entrustment, which is why there is the entrustment; if it were moved to the end, the Dharma would have no place of destination—this is the seventh impossibility. Eighth, after the entrustment, it clarifies the vehicles and the persons of the vehicles, and for these matters there must be an entrustment; if it were moved to the end, master and disciple would be intermingled—this is the eighth impossibility. As for their ten contradictions, each is narrated and refuted in full in the *Miaole ji*.
