Answer: The Avataṃsaka expounds the distinct and perfect [teachings] and does not preach the Tripiṭaka and shared [teachings], so the [practitioners of the] two vehicles present in the assembly were as if deaf and mute. Since it was not received into the hands of the practitioners of the two vehicles, it could not transform the ordinary into the noble; it was entirely raw, like milk. Thereupon, traveling and converting at the Deer Park, [the Buddha] instituted the gradual and provisional, and therein they attained benefit, transformed the false reckonings of heterodox paths, and realized unoutflowing nirvāṇa. Next, during the reprimand of partiality in the Vaipulya and the purification in the Prajñā, leading up to the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka, the one reality was grandly revealed. These are the śrāvakas of the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka; thus they are non-dual and yet dual. Śāriputra past and present is not the same, being dual and yet non-dual. It is merely one person, fundamentally not two individuals.
