To Dharma Master Miaoguo, Lecture Master and Treatise Master (Wenchang): Time passes swiftly, and my monastic age has increased again. I only feel my strength declining, not yet having realized the fruit. Daily I think of changing this retribution body to partake in that supreme journey, fulfilling what I have longed for, which will surely be achieved. You practice the mind with diligent progress and engage fully for the sake of the Dharma. Benefiting both self and others, without failing the three kinds of emptiness, you will surely attain the wondrous fruit in this life. Although the power of my contemplation is not yet full, my mind has achieved some attainment; in my active life and retirement, preaching and practice, I dare not depart from the bounds of Zhizhe. I have always been concerned that the text of the *Commentary on the Sixteen Contemplations* is terse while its principles are profound, so that lecturers and students are mostly shallow and superficial; since the Dharma is not matched, the seeds are not strengthened. Therefore, following my reflections, I have composed a private subcommentary. As you belong to our school and share my intentions, I have newly copied two fascicles to send along. If, upon reading and exploring them, they provide any benefit, you should lecture on and explain them to the assembly. If there are any differences, you may note them down and send them here. Beyond this, regulate body and mind so as to fulfill your vows and practice. What more need I say? Old monk (sign-manual). Delivered to Master Chang for his receipt.
