The master's taboo name was Xiji, his courtesy name was Changzhao, his secular surname was Hu, and he was a man of Yongjia. He had his hair shaved and took the robes at Kaiyuan Monastery in his native prefecture. At nineteen he received full ordination, studied the Vinaya in Kuaiji, and soon relied on Guoqing [Monastery] to study the Tiantai teachings. From Master Zhizhe anciently down to Master Zhanran, lamp succeeded lamp, spreading throughout the world. Since the burning and destruction under Emperor Wuzong of the Tang, the subtle words were temporarily sullied, and the transmission was interrupted halfway. Yet he was able to diligently investigate and savor them, preaching and propagating everywhere, establishing outlines and examining texts, instructing people without weariness; he dwelt in the mountains for forty-five years, with more than two hundred people receiving his learning. During the reign of the Qian family of the King of Deng, admiring his moral virtue, they bestowed upon him a purple robe and a master's title, erected buildings to house him, and sent seasonal offerings to sustain him. Today, those upholding conversion and continuing the lineage in the prefectures throughout the empire are mostly his disciples. The master conferred the bodhisattva precepts upon several hundred thousand people. His virtuous conduct and deeds are fully recorded in the monastic histories. On the fourth day of the eleventh month in the dinghai year, the fourth year of Yongxi [987 CE], he passed away in his abbot's quarters, at the age of sixty-nine, with a monastic age of fifty. The next year the era name was changed to Duangong; on the sixteenth day of the last month of summer in the wuzi year, a pagoda pavilion was built, and he was buried at the southeast corner of Guoqing Monastery. Of more than twenty eminent disciples, the senior ones were Lingyu and Lingji; the one who inherited the mantle was Jiaoru, who truly bore the burden, serving him according to propriety and burying him according to propriety. Being like this, what regret could there be? Unworthily transmitting the later flame and fully acquainted with his former traces, I compose this inscription:
