7.155

所傳莫越乎道，能弘必藉乎人。不為有人而存，不為無人而亡，道固常自若也。然不得其人而弘之，則道奚益於生靈哉？惟得人以弘，其道不絕，則此道昭著，若日月嗣照於無窮者也。

Nothing surpasses the Way in what is transmitted; its capacity to spread must rely upon people. It does not exist because there are people, nor does it perish because there are no people; the Way is indeed ever constant in itself. Yet if it does not find the right people to propagate it, what benefit could the Way bring to sentient beings? Only when it gains people to propagate it so that its Way is never severed does this Way shine brilliantly, like the sun and moon shining successively without end.
