Dharma Master Baoyun (Yitong) originally belonged to the royal clan of Goryeo. Delighting in the Way and weary of the world, he followed the Buddha and shaved his head. He first transmitted the Avataṃsaka and the Awakening of Faith, and the assembly already followed him with joy. When he grew to manhood, he crossed the vast sea to China. At first he visited Yunju and accorded with the Southern School. Reconsidering that the doctrinal teachings and contemplation of Tiantai had barely survived by a single thread through the chaos of the Five Dynasties, he resolved to go to the chamber of Master Ji of Luoxi, and instantly received his transmission. Possessing the complete learning, his renown was heard in all four directions. Soon after, he vowed to return to his homeland to propagate the Dharma's transformation. Carrying his staff, he boarded a ship at Siming, where the regional governor, Prince Huaihai Lord Qian (Weizhi), happened to inquire about the essentials of the mind and invited him to be his precept master. From then on, monastics and laypeople looked to him with reverence and firmly detained him to expound the Dharma. It happened that the Transport Commissioner Lord Gu (Chenghui) donated his residence to establish a monastery and invited the master to be the founding abbot. Dragons and elephants gathered like clouds, and he lectured and trained disciples for two cycles of twelve years. He then entrusted the Great Dharma to Lord Fazhi Li, who was known as the Venerable Siming. Fazhi presided over Yanqing for nearly forty years, and this Way thereupon flourished greatly throughout the world. Was this not brought about by having obtained people who could transmit and propagate it? Recently, fulfilling my long-held aspiration, I, [Zong]xiao, compiled and carved the posthumous writings of Siming. Reflecting further that the founding patriarch Baoyun and our Siming were like an exemplary father and son, inner and outer in the era of the Semblance Dharma, reviving our one school, if his virtuous deeds were not transmitted to the world, then the teachings would lose their ancestral origin, and how could future generations investigate them? Therefore, examining the facts on stelae and various records, I obtained twenty pieces in all concerning the master’s deeds and his successors, making a separate fascicle entitled 'Collection of the Revival of the Patriarchs at Baoyun', which took its name from the plaque of the Patriarchs' Hall of this monastery that read 'Reviving the Patriarchs'. Those who view this text should know that the beauty of our patriarch’s posthumous virtue must not be abandoned merely because the one who gathered it is lowly. Respectfully prefaced by the bhikṣu [Zong]xiao on a clear morning in the middle month of spring, the guihai year of the Jiatai reign period.
