The above is the Record of the Stone Stūpa of Master Tong. Re-erected on the twenty-first day of the tenth month in the gengchen year of the Shaoxing era by the Dharma-inheriting abbot Zhiqian. Master Tong came from Samhan, and his fame resonated through China. He resided at Baoyun for over two decades, truly being the first generation. Masters such as Fazhi and Ciyun were his eminent disciples. That the Tiantai teaching fell in the middle and was revived was through the Master's efforts. Yet the stone inscriptions of his contemporary deeds and conduct no longer survive. Master Qian vigorously searched for them, and only then obtained the stūpa record, whereupon he carved it once more. He also opened a portrait hall, sculptured the Master's seated image, as well as the portrait eulogized by the King of Wuyue, together with the stone tablet above it. Clearing the site of the Wushi Stūpa on Mount Aśoka, he covered it with stone to display it to later generations. Thereupon the Way of Master Tong became even more manifest; at that time, Qian had arrived for only a little more than half a year. Baoyun was first established by Tong and transmitted for two hundred years; in recent years it had fallen into extreme ruin. Qian looked upon it with deep feeling, buttressed the leaning and repaired the rotted, gradually restoring its former state; he may indeed be said not to have failed the ancestral master's intention of entrustment and shouldering [the burden]. During the Tianbao era of the Sage Song, the Transport Commissioner Gu Chenghui donated his residence to house the Master; subsequently, the Judicial Investigator Chen Yun also donated four hundred and thirty mu of land at Xiyu, which over the years was no longer known. Qian also sculptured statues of the two lords and made them known, so that people respected all the more his knowing the root. Qian attained the Dharma under Master Mingzhi, the fifth generation of Yanqing, so his lineage also had its source. Respectfully written by Wang Boxiang, Court Gentleman for Closing the Court on the Left and Supervisor of the Chongdao Abbey in Taizhou.
