Baoyun is an ancient bodhimaṇḍa. When Zongying, in his unworthiness, assumed the vacancy of abbot, the Grand Preceptor and Grand Chancellor, the Duke of the State of Wei, happened to grace the monastery with a visit. He first inquired after the ancestral master's historic traces. In a single niche exposed to wind and rain, the images of the two great beings Zhizhe and Baoyun were collapsed inside. The Duke pointed to Baoyun and turned to Zongying, saying: 'Were not the two venerables Fazhi and Ciyun direct disciples of this old master? To this day the people of this land refer to this as Master-Grandfather Tong's bodhimaṇḍa, which was founded on account of his two disciples. One should open up a hall and sculpt and paint the images of the four patriarchal masters to renovate this monastery.' Zongying was startled and ashamed before the noble minister's intention to protect the Dharma; thereupon, along the eastern corridor, he constructed the Hall of Ancestral Revival. When the hall was completed, the images were also fully arranged, and the assembly requested Duke Wei to compose eulogies. The Duke did not fall into cognitive views nor did he engage in discursive thinking; the four eulogies were accomplished immediately, vastly illuminating the very marrow of our ancestors, and also fully serving to inspire the sight and hearing of the four directions. After Zongying hung them as inscribed boards, he further carved them upon hard stone, supplying Baoyun's missing records and providing an inexhaustible transmission for our school. On the first day of the fourth month in the fourteenth year of the Chunxi era, Zongying, abbot of the Baoyun Doctrinal Cloister and transmitter of Tiantai doctrinal teachings and contemplation, respectfully recorded this.
