Dharma Master Ciyun was a native of Ninghai in Tai. He shed the secular garments at Mount Dongye, and once he became a monk, he immediately entered Guoqing, where he burned his fingers before the image of Samantabhadra, vowing to study the sacred teachings of Tiantai. Slowly carrying his book-satchel, he hastened to Baoyun. On the way, he suddenly dreamed of a monk who said of himself, 'I am the preceptor Mañjuśrī.' When he arrived and prostrated at Tong's feet, he casually realized that the monk of his dream was this very master, and thereupon he took the Way to heart and received it. When Tong returned to stillness, he went back to Tiantai. In the first year of Chunhua, when the master was twenty-eight years old, the assembly invited him to reside at Baoyun. He stayed for twelve years and lectured on the four great scriptures. In the fifth year of Xianping, he returned to Dongshan; in his later years, he moved to Tianzhu, broadly propagating the Dharma transformation, and ended his days in secluded retreat there. While the master resided at Baoyun, there were four miraculous events.
