I respectfully submit: Among the ranks of Buddhist monasteries, none surpasses the ancestral home of Baoyun. The people of this land even now know of the ancient Buddha of Jilin; he was truly the fine steed of our culture, resounding with great fame south of the Dipper. After the ashes of the kalpa, the king of trees was established first; throughout our dynasty, eminent figures have flourished all the more. It is like the lute, zither, and harpsichord, which must depend on marvelous fingers to produce the consummate sound. Although grasses, trees, and groves are said to be insentient, they too know which way to incline. Magnifying the grand sight of this single hall, observing the magnificent scale of several generations: the rainbow-like eaves soar as if to ascend into the Milky Way; the pure, penetrating call of the kalaviṅka is about to pervade the human realm. Reverently we turn to the Great Dharma Master presiding over the Baoyun Hall—a solitary figure beyond the dust, a seasoned craftsman of the forest, following in the footsteps of dragons and elephants, maintaining the bells and Sanskrit chants morning and evening; the splendid architecture is completely renewed, accomplished with instant dispatch. Summer is upon the season, when the balmy southern breeze begins to blow; monastics and laypeople attend the banquet, together lingering beneath the shower of flowers. The donor, So-and-so, whose noble sentiments are lofty and independent, and whose harmonious spirit is expansive and congenial, is willing to join the pure excursion of the Lotus Society, proving to be an excellent friend of Gṛdhrakūṭa. Having been granted the sight of such extraordinary excellence, we who unworthily occupy the role of musicians, without measuring our crude talents, venture to present an impromptu verse:
