Answer: The three vehicles together contemplate illusory existence, and all grasp mere emptiness; spoken from the major division, this is called 'practicing together.' Bodhisattvas do not stop at biased emptiness but additionally know the central reality; spoken from the perspective of sharp faculties, they attain the 'distant edge.' Hence we know that if it were called the 'shared teaching' [alone], the bodhisattva would have to remain within his assigned portion and would attain only the 'near edge,' which would suffer from the defect of rigid limitation. If it is called the 'transitional teaching,' the bodhisattva may be received by the later [teachings] and thus attain the 'distant edge,' possessing the beauty of ease and flexibility.
