Twentieth Question: The first fascicle of the Zhiguan says regarding the supernormal powers of the Buddha of the Tripiṭaka Teaching: 'With one mind he performs one thing, and cannot do many.' The Hongjue says: 'When the transformed master speaks, the transformed deed speaks; when the transformed master is silent, the transformed deed is silent. If speech and silence are like this, other matters are also so; hence it is not effortless, genuine transformation.' A recent doubter says: 'According to the Abhidharmakośa, fascicle 27, it says: "The supernormal powers of a śrāvaka perform only one thing with one mind; the supernormal powers of a Tathāgata perform immeasurable things with one mind." As its verse says: "When one transformed master speaks, all the transformations speak. If one transformed master is silent, all the transformations are likewise so. If the transformed body and the transformed master speak, both are necessarily not the Buddha." How does the Zhiguan now contradict that text? Furthermore, the ninth fascicle of the Dazhidulun clarifies the Vaibhāṣika Buddha-meaning, which also contradicts the present commentary's text. We cannot cite them all in detail.'
