"With utmost sincerity I repent: I, the bhikṣu [Name], together with all sentient beings of the dharmadhātu, from many kalpas onward, through the causes and conditions of the ear faculty, have pursued external sounds. When hearing exquisite sounds, the mind gave rise to deluded attachment; when hearing evil sounds, one hundred and eight kinds of afflictive thieves arose to do harm. Because of such an evil ear, one receives evil retribution, constantly hearing evil sounds and generating conditions of grasping. Because of hearing inverted [sounds], one falls into evil destinies and borderlands where, holding wrong views, one does not hear the true Dharma; everywhere deludedly clinging without a moment's pause. Bound by these auditory cavities, my conscious spirit was worn down and plunged into the three lower realms. The Buddhas of the ten directions are ever-present preaching the Dharma, yet because of the obstacles of my turbid and evil ears, I have not heard them. Only now have I awakened; reciting and upholding the ocean-treasury of Mahāyāna merits, I take refuge in Samantabhadra Bodhisattva and all the World-Honored Ones, burn incense, scatter flowers, and declare the faults and transgressions of the ears, not daring to conceal them. By these causes and conditions, may all the heavy transgressions arising from the ear faculty of myself and the sentient beings of the dharmadhātu become completely purified." (Having repented, pay homage to the Three Jewels.)
