9. Repentance (kṣamā)
When the practitioner has finished reciting the mantra, they should contemplate that all obstacles of conditions arise from past causes. In past lives and the present life, what evil have we not committed together with sentient beings? As karmic debts have accumulated, meeting life after life, becoming enemies, kin, obstacles, or afflictions, if one does not repent, there is no way to be liberated and the practice of the path will not succeed. Therefore, one must lay bare one's faults and mournfully plead with the Triratna to eliminate them for oneself. The sūtra says: "For the sake of all sentient beings, repent of the sins of previous karma, and also personally repent of the various evil karmas of immeasurable kalpas." The Lotus Samādhi says: "Though the nature of karma is empty, its retribution is never lost. Due to inverted causes and conditions, one gives rise to various grave sins. Shedding tears and weeping bitterly, orally profess repentance."
