If relieving hungry ghosts, every morning and at all times without hindrance, one takes a clean vessel containing a little pure water, places a little cooked rice and various cakes and food in it, holds the vessel with the left hand, and forms the Jewel Hand Mudrā with the right hand (pressing the index, middle, and little fingers with the thumb, and extending the ring finger to stir over the food; this mudrā is also formed when giving food to ṛṣis). Having chanted the previous Food-Transforming Mantra seven times to empower it, one then recites the names of the Four Tathāgatas: Namo Prabhūtaratna Tathāgata (able to eliminate the stingy karma of hungry ghosts and attain complete merit), Namo Surūpakāya Tathāgata (able to destroy the ugly forms of hungry ghosts and attain complete physical features), Namo Vipulakāya Tathāgata (able to broaden the throats of hungry ghosts so that the food bestowed is fully satisfying), Namo Abhayamkara Tathāgata (able to eliminate all fears of hungry ghosts and enable them to leave the ghost destiny). Having recited the names of the Four Tathāgatas, one snaps the fingers seven times, takes the food vessel, and, on clean ground, extends the arm and pours it out (doing so on a clean stone, on a platform for making food offerings, or into a clean basin is also permissible). Having made this gift, before hungry ghosts in the four directions numbering hundreds of thousands of koṭis of nayutas of Gaṅgā sands, there are in each case forty-nine hu of food of the country of Magadha; having received this food, they are all fully sated, entirely renounce the ghost destiny, and are born in heaven. (If there are monks, nuns, upāsakas, or upāsikās who constantly empower food with this esoteric mantra and the names of the Four Tathāgatas and give it to hungry ghosts, they will be able to fully possess immeasurable merit: those with short lifespans will have their lives prolonged; those of meager merit will have their merit increase and flourish; furthermore, they will obtain fresh and clean complexions, strong majestic virtue, and retentive memory, and quickly fulfill the dāna-pāramitā; all non-humans, yakṣas, rākṣasas, and evil ghosts and spirits will fear this person and not dare to harm them.)
