1. The general introduction: The deep treasury of the Mahāyāna has names and meanings as numerous as dust and sand; therefore the Nirvāṇa-sūtra says: 'One name has immeasurable meanings, and one meaning has immeasurable names.' One must thoroughly examine all the scriptures before understanding the purport of the sections; it is not like the secular books of the Small Vehicle, where the meaning is exhausted by following the text. Why must it be so? Because the Pure Land is profound and expansive, and the sūtras and treatises are hidden and manifest, causing ordinary sentiments to speculate in various ways; fearing that flattering chatter and excessive talk might arise, with a hundred blind ones clinging to one-sided attachments, confused and ignorant, hindering rebirth. Now we shall briefly raise a few instances and refute them one by one.
