Second, regarding relying on various Mahāyāna works to show the proper rules for preaching and listening: within this there are six points. First, the *Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra* says: "Toward the preacher of the Dharma, form the thought of a king of physicians and the thought of one who pulls out suffering; toward the Dharma that is preached, form the thought of ambrosia (amṛta) and the thought of ghee; as a listener to the Dharma, form the thought of increasing superior understanding and the thought of curing illness." If one can be like this, both speaker and listener are capable of maintaining and flourishing the Buddhadharma, and will always be born before the Buddha. Second, the *Da zhidu lun* says: / "The listener looks directly forward like one thirsty drinking water, / Enters into the words and explanations with one mind, / And hearing the Dharma leaps with joy, heart filled with sorrow and delight— / To such a person should one preach." / Third, that treatise also says: "There are two kinds of people who obtain immeasurable and boundless merit. What are the two? First, one who delights in preaching the Dharma; second, one who delights in listening to the Dharma." For this reason, Ānanda said to the Buddha: "Why are the wisdom and spiritual superknowledges attained by Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana the most supreme among the holy disciples?" The Buddha told Ānanda: "When these two people were at the stage of causes, for the sake of the Dharma they did not consider a thousand li difficult; therefore today they are the most supreme." Fourth, the *Larger Sukhāvatīvyūha-sūtra* says: / "If a person has no roots of goodness, / They cannot get to hear this sūtra; / Only those who are pure and possess the precepts / Come to hear the true Dharma." / Fifth, it says: / "If one has previously seen the Bhagavat, / One can believe in this matter; / Having served hundreds of millions of Tathāgatas, / One delights in hearing such a teaching." / Sixth, the *Wuliang qingjing jue jing* says: "If good men and good women, hearing the Pure Land dharma-gate expounded, give rise to sorrow and delight in their hearts, so that the hairs on their bodies stand on end as if pulled out, you should know that this person has already practiced the Buddha Path in past lives. If, moreover, there is a person who, hearing the Pure Land dharma-gate revealed, does not give rise to faith at all, you should know that this person has just come from the three evil destinies, and their lingering offenses are not yet exhausted; it is for this reason that they lack faith and inclination; I say that this person cannot yet attain liberation." Therefore the *Larger Sukhāvatīvyūha-sūtra* says: / "Those who are arrogant, corrupt, and indolent / Find it difficult to believe in this Dharma."
