Third, regarding the two realms of purity and defilement here and there, also termed defiled and undefiled: If we speak of the objective realm here, there are only the mounds and pits of the three evil paths, mountain ravines, saline sands, thorns and briars, floods and droughts, violent winds and harsh contacts, thunder and lightning, tigers, wolves, and venomous beasts, evil bandits and wicked children, chaos and devastation, and the ruin of the three disasters. Speaking of the direct retribution, there are the three poisons, the eight inversions, sorrow, grief, jealousy, envy, many illnesses, short lifespans, hunger, thirst, cold, and heat, constantly pursued by the demons of the overseer of destiny. It is profoundly foul and evil, beyond full description, hence called defiled, and deeply to be reviled. As for the superiority of rebirth in that land, according to the *Larger Sūtra*, whenever humans and devas of the ten directions are born in that land, there are none who do not attain diverse benefits. What are they? First, for those born in that land, when walking, golden lotuses support their feet; when sitting, jeweled thrones bear their bodies; when going out, Śakra is before them; when entering, Brahmā follows behind. All the noble assemblies are one's close companions; Amitābha Buddha is one's great master. Beneath jeweled trees and jeweled groves, one roams freely at will; in the ponds of eight virtues, one lets the spirit wander and washes one's feet. In form, one's body is equally golden; in lifespan, one's life is equal to the Buddha's. In study, all approaches advance together; in cessation, the two truths fuse and harmonize. To cross over beings in the ten directions, one rides great supernormal powers; to rest peacefully for a while, one sits in the gates of the three forms of emptiness; to travel, one enters the path of the eightfold correctness; to arrive, one reaches great nirvāṇa. All sentient beings who merely reach that land realize these benefits. Why not consider this and go quickly?
