Furthermore, as the Pratyutpanna-buddha-saṃmukhāvasthita-samādhi-sūtra states, the Buddha addressed the bodhisattva Bhadrapāla: "There is a samādhi named 'All Buddhas of the Ten Directions Standing Before One.' If you wish quickly to attain this samādhi, you should constantly guard, practice, and maintain it, and must not have doubtful thoughts even as much as a hair. If monks, nuns, laymen, or laywomen wish to practice and learn this samādhi, for seven days and seven nights they should cast off sleep, abandon all distracted thoughts, dwell in a solitary place, and recollect the true golden body of Amitābha Buddha of the western direction, his thirty-two marks illuminating through and through, upright and incomparable. If with single mind they visualize, mentally recollect, and orally invoke, thought after thought without interruption—" The Buddha said: "—after seven days they will see him. It is just as when someone observes the stars at night: one star is one Buddha. If any among the fourfold assembly practice this contemplation, seeing all the stars, they will immediately see all the buddhas." Furthermore, as proved by this sūtra, seeing the Buddha is also due to the external addition of Amitābha Buddha's three powers. What is called samādhi is that the practitioner of buddhānusmṛti orally invokes and mentally recollects without any other mixed thoughts; thought after thought abiding in mind, sound after sound continuing, the eye of the mind then opens, and one attains the vision of that Buddha appearing clearly. This is named concentration, and it is also named samādhi. When truly seeing the Buddha, one also sees the holy assembly and all the adornments; therefore it is called the adhipati-pratyaya of the samādhi of seeing the Buddha and the Pure Land.
