Explanation: Some say that among the four karmas, it is subsumed by the two karmas: bright-bright karma and mixed karma. Because dark-dark karma is unwholesome, it can only induce [rebirth in] the three destinations; how could it bring about retribution in a pure land? Uncontaminated karma cannot induce retribution: although its essence is pure, it is not a cause of maturation; thus only the remaining two karmas induce retribution in a pure land. If one has not yet attained the concentration of the higher realms and cultivates karma for the Western [Direction] with a mind of the desire realm, one uses mixed karma to achieve rebirth in the Western [Direction]. If one has already subdued the afflictions of desire and attained a pure mind of the higher realms to be born in the Western [Direction], one uses bright-bright karma to be born in the pure land. Others say this is not so: these three kinds of karma are all distinguished in terms of the wholesome and unwholesome rebirth destinies of the two realms of desire and form in a defiled land; they are not discussed in terms of bright-bright and other wholesome karmas for rebirth in the Western [Direction]. Furthermore, mixed karma is the karma of humans and devas of the desire realm, which can bring about mixed retribution: although one experiences pleasant fruits, one also incurs painful retribution; therefore one experiences painful and pleasant fruits in the desire realm. When one achieves rebirth in the pure land, there are no sufferings at all—it is solely peaceful and joyful; how could mixed karma be allowed to be the cause of a pure land? If only bright-bright karma were the cause of a pure land, then if one has not yet attained the concentrations of the four dhyānas, by cause of what karma would one be born in the Western [Direction]? Therefore we know that the correct cause of the pure land is not subsumed by the aforementioned karmas. That the aforementioned four karmas do not fully subsume all phenomena—how does that obstruct the principle? Moreover, there are texts stating that the karma of the formless realm is not subsumed by the four karmas. Based on this, we can know by analogy that the four karmas do not exhaustively subsume all karmas.
