Explanation: There are three meanings in accordance with which one is able to see the Buddhas of the ten directions. First, because the merits of the Buddhas are all equal, and they are all equal in benefiting themselves and benefiting others and in their transforming benefit, therefore by contemplating one Buddha one sees the Buddhas of the ten directions. Thus the Mañjuśrī-prajñā speaks of the single-practice samādhi, saying: 'If one can continue from thought to thought upon one Buddha, then within that mindfulness one can see the Buddhas of the past, future, and present. Why is this? The merit of being mindful of one Buddha is immeasurable and limitless, and is also non-dual with the merits of immeasurable Buddhas. The inconceivable dharmas of the Buddhas are equal and without discrimination; all ride upon the one suchness to achieve the supreme, right awakening, and all possess immeasurable merits and eloquence.' Second explanation: because by seeing one Buddha one attains buddhānusmṛti-samādhi, which removes obstacles and eliminates offenses, one is universally able to see the Buddhas of the ten directions. Third explanation: Amitābha Buddha's light universally illuminates the worlds of the ten directions; by means of this light one is able to see the Buddhas of the ten directions. The Pratyutpanna-samādhi Sūtra says: 'Bodhisattva Bhadrapāla asked Śākyamuni Buddha, saying: "How can future sentient beings see the Buddhas of the ten directions?" The Buddha instructed him to be mindful of Amitābha Buddha, and then he would see all the Buddhas of the ten directions.' Because this Buddha especially has conditions with the sentient beings of the Sahā world, if they first concentrate their minds on reciting [the name of] this Buddha, samādhi will be easy to achieve, obstacles will be removed and offenses eliminated, and the light, universally illuminating, will enable them to see the Buddhas of the ten directions.
