6.43

釋曰：彼經供養佛是好時，然供養佛是有相心，供養功德少；持經是惡時，作無相心，持經功德多也。今此聞經念佛同是惡時，悉但有相，然與阿彌陀佛宿舊緣熟，惡世稱佛生信極難。佛能弘經，是以稱佛滅罪多彼聞經也。

I explain: in that sūtra, making offerings to buddhas occurs in a good era, but making offerings to buddhas is done with a mind focused on marks, so the merit of making offerings is small; upholding the scripture occurs in an evil era, and one does so with a mind free of marks, so the merit of upholding the scripture is great. Here, both hearing the scripture and recollecting the Buddha occur in an evil era, and both are merely focused on marks. However, affinities from past lives with Amitābha are ripe, and giving rise to faith by reciting the Buddha['s name] in an evil era is extremely difficult. The Buddha is able to propagate scriptures; therefore, reciting the Buddha['s name] extinguishes more transgressions than hearing scriptures.
