If discussed in detailed distinction: as for the highest rebirth of the highest grade, they generate three kinds of mind, as the Awakening of Faith says: "The stage of generating the mind through the perfection of faith is at the final mind of the ten faiths." Being reborn there and immediately attaining the anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti refers to the anutpattika-kṣānti of contemplative conditioning, because the Benye jing states that anutpattika-kṣānti is in the stage of understanding. As for the middle rebirth of the highest grade, their stage is at the beginning of the ten faiths; because one kalpa here is one day there, that they attain anutpattika-kṣānti after passing through one small kalpa refers to the anutpattika-kṣānti of realizing the principle, which corresponds to the first bhūmi. As for the lowest rebirth of the highest grade, this refers to those prior to the ten faiths, from taking refuge in the Three Jewels with faith and receiving the bodhisattva precepts onward; because they also believe in cause and effect, do not slander the Mahāyāna, and simply generate the unsurpassed mind of the Way, for seven days they only see the Buddha's body without clear understanding in mind, and after three weeks see and hear clearly, meaning that because this person has not yet been able to rely on the gate of karmic consciousness to see the Tathāgata, only after three weeks do they enter the ten abodes of understanding and see that the Buddha arises solely from the mind. That they dwell in the Pramuditā-bhūmi after passing three small kalpas means that those small kalpas correspond to asaṃkhyeyas here; therefore, the middle grade takes one small kalpa, and the lowest grade takes three small kalpas. That both enter the first bhūmi is because bodhisattvas of the stage of resolute practice have faculties that are sharp or dull and practices that are diligent or lax; there are only differences in length and brevity, while their meritorious practice is equal. The remaining grades below may be known by analogy with this. Within the three middle grades, the highest is the stage of the nirvedha-bhāgīya of heat, summit, and forbearance; the middle grade is the mokṣa-bhāgīya of the former three preparatory practices; the lowest grade comprises ordinary beings headed toward goodness prior to the five stops [of the mind]. These three grades of people all attain nirvāṇa in the present life, but are merely divided into three grades by taking half a kalpa upon rebirth. Those of the three lower grades are collectively all ordinary beings headed toward evil, who commit various evil and heinous deeds of varying lightness and heaviness; encountering conditions, hearing the Dharma, and having their sins extinguished, they constitute three grades, with no further distinction of stages.
