"The Buddha told Ānanda: 'Among the devas and humans of the worlds of the ten directions who with sincere minds aspire to be reborn in that land, there are generally three categories: those of the upper category abandon household life, cast off desires, and become śramaṇas; they generate the mind of bodhi, single-mindedly and exclusively concentrate on the Buddha of Immeasurable Life, cultivate various meritorious deeds, and aspire to be reborn in that land. When such sentient beings approach the end of their lives, the Buddha of Immeasurable Life, together with a great assembly, appears before them, and they immediately follow that Buddha to be reborn in that land, whereupon they are naturally transformed and born within a seven-jeweled flower, abiding in non-retrogression, with valiant wisdom and sovereign supernormal powers. Therefore, Ānanda, sentient beings who wish to see the Buddha of Immeasurable Life in this present life should generate the unsurpassed mind of bodhi, cultivate merit, and aspire to be reborn in that land.'"
