"The Buddha said to Ānanda: 'As for those of the middle category: among the devas and humans of the worlds of the ten directions who with sincere minds aspire to be reborn in that land, although they are unable to practice as śramaṇas and extensively cultivate merit, they should generate the unsurpassed mind of bodhi, single-mindedly and exclusively concentrate on the Buddha of Immeasurable Life, cultivate good deeds to some degree, uphold the purification precepts, erect stūpas and images, feed śramaṇas, suspend silk banners and light lamps, scatter flowers and burn incense, and through this dedication aspire to be reborn in that land. When that person approaches death, the Buddha of Immeasurable Life manifests a transformation body, whose radiant major marks and minor signs are fully like those of the true Buddha, appearing before them together with a great assembly. They immediately follow the transformation Buddha to be reborn in that land and abide in non-retrogression, with merit and wisdom like those of the upper category.'"
