「又准《大寶積經》：『阿彌陀佛作法藏比丘時，發四十八大弘誓願中說：「若我得成佛時，十方天人聞我名字，不得菩薩無生法忍諸法總持者，不取正覺；生我國土不得三十二相者，不取正覺；十念成就不生我國者，不取正覺；若生我國中，更重墮地獄及三塗惡道者，不取正覺；生我國土，形貌不平，一有好醜者，亦不取正覺；生我國中，不得天眼、天耳，六通自在者，不取正覺；十方眾生稱我名字，不得十方諸佛，咨嗟讚歎我名者，不取正覺；若女人厭惡女身，求生我國，臨命終時，不轉女身成男子，復受女身者，不取正覺。」』言正覺者亦明菩提，若一切眾生乘我願力，不得如上果報，我即不證無上菩提，即是誑諸眾生，我誓當在惡道中，不得無上菩提。此是阿彌陀二立誓願處。

"Furthermore, according to the Mahāratnakūṭa-sūtra: 'When Amitābha Buddha was the bhikṣu Dharmākara, in making his forty-eight great, vast vows, he said: "If, when I attain Buddhahood, the devas and humans of the ten directions hear my name and do not attain the bodhisattva's anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti and dhāraṇīs of all dharmas, may I not attain sambodhi. If those born in my land do not attain the thirty-two marks, may I not attain sambodhi. If those who accomplish ten recitations are not born in my land, may I not attain sambodhi. If those born in my land should fall again into the hells and the three evil destinies, may I not attain sambodhi. If those born in my land are of unequal appearance, such that there is any distinction of beautiful or ugly, may I not attain sambodhi. If those born in my land do not obtain the divine eye, the divine ear, and the six supernatural powers at will, may I not attain sambodhi. If sentient beings of the ten directions invoke my name, and the Buddhas of the ten directions do not praise and extol my name, may I not attain sambodhi. If a woman despises the female body, seeks rebirth in my land, and at the time of death is not transformed from a female body into a male, but again receives a female body, may I not attain sambodhi."' By 'sambodhi' is meant bodhi. If all sentient beings rely on the power of my vows and do not obtain the retribution described above, then I will not realize unexcelled bodhi; that would mean deceiving all sentient beings, and I vow that I should remain in the evil destinies and never attain unexcelled bodhi. This is where Amitābha established his vows.
