The constellations grace the heavens, yet no dazzling brilliance surpasses the lunar crescent; the surges carve out rivers, yet all currents converge into the vast dark sea. Therefore the ten thousand dharmas are mind-only, and merit truly resides in a single thought; a thousand carriages follow the same rut, and the Way does not stray from the dhāraṇī. Possessing the most supreme marvelous gateway, being the shortcut for escaping saṃsāra—is it not solely buddhānusmṛti? Indeed, since Amitābha's land appeared, the compassionate vessel has ferried across those sunken through accumulated kalpas; since the pure land gate opened, the dharmadhātu has formed an unhindered assembly. Mahāsthāmaprāpta practiced it and realized perfect penetration; the Benevolent One praised it and had compassion on [those in] the Sahā world. The great ocean-like assembly returns together, all kinds of music echoing through the groves of jeweled trees; the eighteen worthies joined together in fellowship, revealing the true school amid the fragrance of white lotuses. Compassion and wisdom are practiced in tandem; sages and ordinary beings are both gathered in. For when the king of physicians protects the world, all methods of immortals and recipes for the Way are superseded; when the sun of wisdom hangs in midsky, the dark room and dim paths are instantly broken open. It transforms the world into pure gold, and one attains the rank of an avaivartika; sitting on a lotus flower, one sees the Buddha, and its fruition verifies non-arising. It is like a winding pearl with nine bends, which may nonetheless be threaded with an inch of cord; or the many flavors of the hundred streams, which are all mastered by tasting a single drop. If you wish to dry up the ocean of karma, you must be mindful of Amitābha. The guidelines of the scriptures are dense and vast; pursuing them widely makes it very difficult to tally with the principle. Chan meditation is silent and illuminating; practicing it brings fear of straying into bifurcated paths. How could either compare to fixing thought upon that Buddha, reaching the West without the effort of a finger-snap? I, Ruxian, wishing to propagate the donation of the Dharma and thereby circulate this book widely, collected funds from donors to renew its brilliance upon the carved woodblocks. Knowing full well my own shallowness and vulgarity, I have presumptuously added this text. On an auspicious day when many flowers bloomed in the spring of the guichou year of the Wanli era [1613], the śramaṇa of the Buddha Ruxian of the Guohuan Chongfu Chan Monastery at Lianshan respectfully inscribed this with palms joined.
