The Commentary on the Contemplation Sūtra says: "The setting sun like a suspended drum serves to mark the direction toward which thought is directed." The Miaozong says: "As for the method of binding the mind, one must contemplate the setting sun because one desires to direct concentrated thought toward the West, which is facing where Amitābha resides; hence one takes the setting sun seen as the object of thought. Now, in giving rise to the sun within contemplation, the person of the Perfect [Teaching] knows that the thinking mind fundamentally possesses all circumstantial and primary rewards. Now, by using the mind endowed with the sun to focus on the sun that is identical with mind, one causes the sun of one's fundamental nature to manifest before oneself. This is to use the dharmadhātu mind to take the dharmadhātu object as condition and raise the dharmadhātu sun. Since all are the dharmadhātu, how could they not be identical with the empty, the provisional, and the middle? When this mind abides firmly and clearly, then the sun contemplation is accomplished."
