Tiantai's Zhiguan states: "The constantly sitting samādhi comes from what Mañjuśrī taught; the Mañjuśrīparipṛcchā-sūtra calls it the 'single-practice samādhi'. Taking ninety days as one period, one sits cross-legged in proper posture, directly facing the direction of a single Buddha, upright and properly oriented, continuing moment by moment without interruption. If exhausted from sitting, or afflicted by illness, or overcome by the hindrance of sleepiness, so that inner and outer obstacles assail and overwhelm one, one should then single-mindedly recite the name of that single Buddha, feeling shame and repentance, taking refuge with one's whole life; its merits are exactly equal to [reciting] the names of the Buddhas of the ten directions." The Fuxing comments: "Regarding 'directly facing the direction of a single Buddha', the direction faced must be due west. This is because if obstacles arise and one undertakes buddha-mindfulness, the direction faced is convenient. Although the sūtra does not restrict one to facing the west, since it instructs one to single-mindedly recite [the name of] one Buddha, and the praises in the various teachings mostly concern Amitābha, the west is therefore taken as the single standard. Regarding 'equal to the Buddhas of the ten directions', this resolves a doubt. Lest anyone suspect, 'Why are we instructed solely to recite Amitābha?', it therefore explains that the merits are exactly equal."
