Mañjuśrī said: 'What is called the single-practice samādhi?' The Buddha said: 'The dharmadhātu has a single mark; focusing one's conditions on the dharmadhātu is called the single-practice samādhi. One who wishes to enter the single-practice samādhi should abide in an empty and quiet place, abandon all distracted thoughts, not grasp at appearances, fix the mind on one buddha, and exclusively recite his name. Following the direction of the buddha, keep the body upright and face it directly. If one can continuously maintain mindfulness on one buddha from thought to thought, then within that mindfulness one can see all buddhas of the past and present. Why is this? The merit of mindfulness of one buddha is not different from the merit of immeasurable buddhas; they all constitute one suchness, achieving supreme, perfect awakening.'
