論四十三「問曰：菩薩法應度生，何以但至清淨無量壽佛國土中？答：菩薩有二種，一者慈悲心多為眾生、二者多集諸佛功德。樂多集功德者，至一乘清淨無量壽國土。好多為眾生者，至無佛法眾處，讚歎三寶之音。」又論四十五曰「菩薩有二：有先自成就功德，然後度眾生；有先成就眾生，後自成就功德者。」

Fascicle forty-three of the treatise states: "Question: The bodhisattva's norm is to deliver sentient beings; why do they only go to the pure land of Amitāyus Buddha? Answer: Bodhisattvas are of two kinds: first, those whose compassionate minds are mostly oriented toward sentient beings; second, those who mostly accumulate the merits of all Buddhas. Those who delight in accumulating many merits go to the One Vehicle Pure Land of Amitāyus. Those who are fond of acting mostly for sentient beings go to places without the Buddha, Dharma, or Saṅgha, praising the voice of the Three Jewels." Furthermore, fascicle forty-five of the treatise states: "Bodhisattvas are of two kinds: there are those who first achieve merit for themselves and afterwards deliver sentient beings; and there are those who first bring sentient beings to accomplishment and afterwards achieve merit for themselves."
