I have heard that to the west of the golden quarter, where the sun sets, distant from China by a hundred thousand koṭis of lands, there is the Land of Ultimate Bliss. The Buddha of that land has a body six hundred thousand koṭis of Gaṅgā-sands of yojanas tall; the white curl between his eyebrows turns gracefully to the right like five Mount Sumerus; his eyes are blue and white like the waters of the four great oceans; he sits upright expounding the Dharma, serenely and constantly abiding. The ponds gleam with golden sand, the shores are lined with precious trees, balustrades completely cover [the banks], and nets of gems are spread all around; giant clam shells and vaidūrya serve as the ornaments of pavilions and palaces, crystal and agate radiate the glory of stairs and plinths—these are all what the Buddhas have verified, containing no false words. As for the transformation tableau of the western Pure Land painted with gold and silver paste, it was commissioned by Lady Qin of Fengyi commandery on behalf of her deceased husband, Lord Wei, the prefectural governor of Huzhou. The lady possesses the purity of ice and jade and spreads virtuous and sage instructions; because the righteousness of husband and wife is great, she hopes to rescue him from the dark paths; because the love between father and child is profound, she clearly renews his great blessings. She vowed to give up precious possessions and search meticulously for famous artisans, sketching the outlines in gold and creating the forms in silver: the merits of the eight virtues ripple across ponds of blue lotuses; the fragrant blossoms of the seven treasures shine upon grounds of yellow gold; where the clear breeze strokes, it seems to produce the five musical tones; the hundreds of thousands of wondrous musical instruments all appear to be playing. Whether those who have already made the vow or have not yet made the vow, whether those who are already due to be born or have not yet attained birth, by mindfully concentrating for seven days they will certainly be born in that land. Its merits are boundless, impossible to fathom and name. The praise says:
