Vasubandhu's Vajracchedikā-prajñāpāramitā-upadeśa verse says: 'When wisdom practices Consciousness-Only and penetrates it, one thus obtains the Pure Land. / It is not bodily form, but the foremost substance; it is not adornment, but adornment.' The treatise's own commentary explains: '"When wisdom practices Consciousness-Only and penetrates it" clarifies that in the true land, the buddhas do not have the phenomenal matter of adorning lands; the buddhas possess only true wisdom. Practicing consciousness and penetrating it means cultivating non-conceptual wisdom and penetrating the real nature of Consciousness-Only. "One thus obtains the Pure Land" means that a bodhisattva practitioner who cultivates this wisdom, practicing Consciousness-Only and penetrating it, thereby obtains the fruit of the Pure Land. "It is not bodily form, but the foremost substance": this line clarifies that the substance of the Pure Land does not take arising and ceasing as its Pure Land form, but takes the real supreme principle as the substance of the Pure Land. "It is not adornment, but adornment": first is the land of form and characteristics, which is the phenomenal adornment of waters, birds, trees, and groves; second is the land of dharmatā, which is correct wisdom realizing and tallying with the uncorrupted merits of tathatā, without bodily characteristics as adornment.'
