The Buddha spoke of the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, universally exhorting all beings of the Sahā world that they should make the vow to be born in that land. However, those who study the sudden [teachings] brush it aside as an expedient teaching. Those who do not comprehend principle become bogged down in phenomenal appearances. I once studied Consciousness-Only: 'only' excludes external objects, while 'consciousness' reveals one's own mind; outside of mind there are no objects, and objects are entirely the mind. The mental dharmas are all-pervading; how could the Pure Land depart from the present thought? Beings and buddhas are of the same substance; Amitābha is entirely one's own mind. Subsuming all sentient beings, truly there is no difference between commoners and sages; harmoniously penetrating the dharmadhātu, how could there be divisions of far and near? The Śūraṅgama Sūtra states: 'When the mind resides in the buddha-country, the sacred realm invisibly appears.' Only for icchantikas who lack the faculty of faith are the hundred thousand koṭis of buddha-lands far separated beyond other quarters. Chan Master Tianyi Huai dedicated himself throughout his life toward the Pure Land. He asked students: 'If one speaks of rejecting defilement and adopting purity, loathing this and desiring that, then the sentiments of adopting and rejecting are the deluded thoughts of sentient beings. If one says there is no Pure Land, then one contradicts the Buddha's words. How then should one who cultivates the Pure Land practice?' He again answered himself: 'To be born is definitely to be born; to go is truly not to go.' If one clarifies this purport, then the mind-only Pure Land is brightly clear without doubt. The treatise says: 'When wisdom practices Consciousness-Only and penetrates it, one thus obtains the Pure Land.' May all like-minded comrades resolve to seek rebirth.
