行婆見師，師問：修行許久？婆稱修行多年。師問：曾見阿難？婆稱多見善知識。師問：如何指示？答曰：直截根源。也不看經，也不念佛。師云：錯了也。因為說法。婆既信服，遂示以二頌：

The practitioner old woman saw the Master. The Master asked, "How long have you been practicing?" The old woman claimed to have practiced for many years. The Master asked, "Have you ever seen an arhat?" The old woman stated that she had seen many spiritual friends. The Master asked, "What instructions did they give?" She replied, "Directly cut to the root source. Neither read sutras nor practice buddha-mindfulness." The Master said, "You are mistaken." Thereupon he preached the Dharma for her. Since the old woman was convinced and submissive, he presented her with two eulogies:
