直截根源不用修，算來此語少來由，
會須把本逃生死，念念彌陀勿外求。
念佛看經是本程，須信從來水是氷，
但向根源深體究，聲聲提起甚分明。

"Directly cutting to the root source without need of practice"—
Thinking it through, this saying has little justification.
You must grasp the foundation to escape birth and death;
Mindful of Amitābha in thought after thought, do not seek outside!
Buddha-mindfulness and sutra-reading are the original journey;
You must believe that from the beginning, water is ice.
Just investigate deeply toward the root source;
Lifting up sound after sound, it is extremely distinct.
