Houshan also had three poems whose aspiration was likewise in the West; now I extract their essential lines and append them here. His poem sent to Canliao says: "My lifelong vow is for the West, / Shaking off the conditions within this realm; / Only with a person beyond the world / Can following one another make us forget the years." His poem sent to Academician Li says: "Gradually seeking the Eastern monastery to discuss this matter, / I rely on the West to provide the rear carriage." His poem parting from Chan Master Yuancheng says: "All my life I have made plans to journey to the West; / Aging in the human realm—what is the meaning of this? / In another year at the Buddha's assembly when meeting the dhūta, / You will know that it is that old layman of years gone by." Layman Houshan was truly the crown of modern poets; his earnestness toward the Land of Bliss was like this. How then could men of letters merely make it their business to twist off several beard hairs just to settle on a single word in a poem?
