Second, explaining the land with remainder: it is the dwelling place of those of the two vehicles and three kinds of bodhisattvas who have realized the path of expediency. Why is this? If one cultivates the two contemplations and severs the delusions common [to all three vehicles] completely, but has not yet severed the sand-like distinct delusions and avidyā, one casts off the body of fragmentary [birth and death] and is born outside the three realms, receiving a body of dharmatā; this land where those with transformative [birth and death] dwell is called the land with remainder. It is also called 'expediency' because it is the dwelling place of practitioners of expediency. The Mahāyānasaṃgraha explains seven kinds of saṃsāra, and this is the fourth, the saṃsāra of expediency.
