First, regarding doubting the master: masters are of two kinds. First are false masters and non-Buddhists who delude and confuse people; they are not to be followed. Second are masters of the true Dharma, who are further categorized into ordinary and sage, cause and effect. In the ordinary and causal stages there may still be things not fully understood, just as Bhāviveka said, 'Maitreya at present is not yet omniscient; I will wait until he attains the path under the dragon-flower tree before asking the way.' This is an instance of it. Now, the one who reveals the West and enjoins us to dedicate our merits toward it is solely the fruit-stage Buddha and sage master, Śākyamuni Tathāgata, as well as the buddhas of the ten directions who extend their broad and long tongues to speak sincere words praising and encouraging rebirth. What further doubt could there be?
