As for 'resolving doubts': doubt is an obstacle to faith; through it even minor worldly virtues cannot be accomplished, much less the great path to bodhi. When ancient and modern masters set their minds on the Pure Land, some wrote commentaries to explain the sūtras, some took the sūtras as authority to compose treatises, some addressed difficulties in response to people's feelings, and some composed verses of praise. Although they arrived at the same goal via different routes, each presented his own view, filling numerous volumes so that investigating them all is truly difficult. Now, subsuming those hundred schools, they are fully covered by three doubts: first, doubting the master; second, doubting the Dharma; third, doubting oneself.
