多見禪人常舉此頌以障念佛之人，蓋彼專以空寂為宗，遂將念佛為著相者。殊不知《勝天王般若》有所謂「以無所念而修念佛」，是豈有著相之病乎？謹和一頌以破其惑云：念佛人多成佛多，誰云歲久却成魔？清珠濁水喻親切，喚不迴頭爭柰何。

One often sees Chan practitioners regularly cite this verse to obstruct those who practice buddhānusmṛti. Because they take emptiness and quiescence alone as their primary tenet, they mistakenly consider buddhānusmṛti to be clinging to characteristics. Little do they know that the Sheng tianwang bore has the so-called 'cultivating buddhānusmṛti by having nothing to be recollected'—how could this possess the flaw of clinging to characteristics? I respectfully match his verse to shatter their delusions, saying: 'Those who recite the Buddha's name are many, and those who attain Buddhahood are many; / Who says that over long years they turn instead into māras? / The clear gem purifying turbid water is an apt metaphor; / If they cannot be called back to turn their heads, what can be done?'
