《妙宗解》曰「雜想觀觀佛身，略有二意：一為前觀八萬相好不成者，乃令捨大而觀丈六。二為觀前八萬勝相已成之人，令其更觀勝劣化用遍十方界，使品位增進。」

The Miaozong jie states: "Contemplating the Buddha's body in the contemplation of miscellaneous marks has roughly two purposes: first, for those who failed to achieve the preceding contemplation of the eighty-four thousand marks and signs, it causes them to abandon the large and contemplate the sixteen-foot [image]. Second, for those who have already achieved the preceding contemplation of the eighty-four thousand superior marks, it causes them further to contemplate the superior and inferior transformed functions pervading the realms of the ten directions, thereby advancing their grade and stage."
